What to Look for in a Web Designer

Finding the right web designer can feel like a minefield. Here's what actually matters when you're choosing someone to build your site.

Portfolio

This is the big one. Look at their previous work. Does it look professional? Do the sites work properly? Are they modern or dated?

If their own website looks bad, yours probably will too.

They should ask questions

If someone just says "yeah I can do a website for you" without asking about your business, your goals, your target audience - that's a red flag.

A good designer wants to understand your business so they can build something that actually works for you.

Communication

Can you actually talk to them? Do they explain things in ways you understand? Or do they use a load of technical jargon to confuse you?

You'll be working with this person for a while. Make sure you get on and can communicate clearly.

What they include

Do they do SEO? Will they set up hosting and domains? Do they provide training so you can update content yourself? What happens after the site launches?

These things matter more than you think.

Pricing

The cheapest option is rarely the best. But equally, don't assume expensive means good. Look at what you get for the price.

Red flags

Vague timeframes. No portfolio. Won't give you a contract. Can't explain the process. Seems more interested in the technical side than your business results.

Trust your gut

If something feels off, it probably is. There are plenty of good web designers out there - don't settle for someone who doesn't feel right.
